Rental LED displays are one of the most asked-about product categories in event production. Unlike fixed walls, rental screens must be fast to build, easy to transport, and flexible enough to create different stage shapes every week.

Which pixel pitch for which event?

The correct pitch depends on the closest camera or audience distance:

  • P2.6–P2.9: corporate events, product launches and close-up broadcast shots.
  • P3.9: the most common all-round stage pitch for mid-size concerts and conferences.
  • P4.8–P5.9: large concerts and festivals where viewers are several metres away.

Choosing a pitch that is too fine adds cost, weight and power without visible benefit when the audience is far away.

Cabinet format matters as much as pitch

Two sizes dominate rental inventories:

  • 500×500 mm or 500×1,000 mm: easy to carry, quick to build and suitable for curved stages.
  • 500×1,000 mm in a 500×500 compatible system: fewer connections and faster rigging.

Before renting or buying, check cabinet weight, the locking system, and whether curved, 90-degree and hanging configurations are possible. Rental systems that allow mixed assembly save a lot of money over time.

Brightness, refresh rate and handling

Indoor stage walls usually need 1,000–1,500 nits. Outdoor or semi-outdoor stages need 4,000–6,500 nits so sunlight does not wash out the image. A refresh rate of 3,840 Hz or higher is important when cameras film the screen, because it avoids visible scan lines.

Real touring panels are also built to survive loading and unloading. Ask about corner protection, module replacement time and the availability of spare modules for a busy season.

Budget beyond the panels

The visible price per square metre is only part of the rental cost. Flight cases, power distribution, processors, rigging, transport, spare modules and trained technicians all affect the final number. When comparing quotations, compare the complete touring package rather than only the panel price.

A simple rental checklist

  1. Confirm the closest viewer distance.
  2. Ask for the recommended pitch and why.
  3. Check cabinet weight, locks and module service time.
  4. Compare full packages, including cases, spares and support.

The best rental screen is not the finest or the cheapest; it is the one your crew can build reliably before the show starts.
